Motorola to party like its 1999 Droid 5 incoming

Remember the keyboard slide out phones that seemed to be in the hands of most Americans ?!

Well Motorola does and the Google company is going to give the Droid 4 a new update in the shape of the .... Droid 5.... wow what a name !

The slide out keyboard is a feature dare I say it - I prefer to a touch screen, because I like to feel the physical click of a button. Its not as easy to typo, and since the problems of the Droids 2 and 3s nasty keyboard experience were sorted in the Droid 4, the 5 should have been tweaked a that little more - close to perfect dam it.

Is this the last of the Motorola pre Google phones Larry Page wasnt too kind about ? If so then this could be the last of the Droid xyz we will ever see, and if it has the Droid name then it will be Verizon exclusive in the US - which would suck. The world needs to have at least one slide out keyboard Android.

There is no internet chatter regarding the Droid 5s release date or pricing -- or what carriers / networks that will offer the the device. Guessing this will remain in the US (as above) and wont make Europe either. - No further news but given that in-the-wild photos are already surfacing, it should only be a matter of time before more details come to pass.

How To Free Up Internal Memory Space On Android Phone

Is your Android phone internal memory space running low? Dont worry, there is a fix for it and its pretty easy.

Having experienced it myself, I looked for solutions to it and I got a few tricks that works.

The steps to fix this issue are highlighted below.

1. One of the ways to free up space is to move apps to SD card.  You can do this in the simplest way or in a more cumbersome way.

The simple way is to download App2SD (App Mgr III) app on Google Play Store (it needs your phone to be rooted for it to work).
Once installed, it will show you various apps installed on your phone internal storage and SD card storage. It will also show lists of apps that can be moved to SD card, those that cant be moved and the percentages of free space left on both memory types as indicated in the images below.

Now all you have to do is tap on any apps listed in the "Movable" section and move these apps that are movable to your SD card. This will free up space on your internal memory.

The cumbersome way which would bring you finally to the place to move apps to your choice storage is to go to Settings/Apps, click on individual app to see if you can move it to SD card. If you can move to SD card, just tap on Move to SD storage or Phone Storage as applied to your device.

Its cumbersome because you have to check each app one after the other to know if its movable or not. If its not movable, it would be greyed out and you wont be able to click on "Move to Phone Storage" button.

2. Another thing that eats internal memory space is apps cache, especially those apps that arent movable to SD card, high volume SMS messages, voluminous call logs and browser history and caches.

To fix this, just download an app called 1 Tap Cleaner (free in Google Play Store). Once its downloaded, launch and click on History. This would bring up a window which you can then clear history etc.

You can do same for Call log/text message or just click on Clear All to allow the app automatically work its magic. Once this is done, you would notice a sizable space on your internal memory.

3. Finally, we are all in the habit of installing apps that we hardly use or dont use at all.
Try and uninstall apps you dont need, especially those apps in internal memory alone. Apps in external memory also have ties and data in the internal memory. Therefore, having too much apps on the SD will tell on the Internal Memory too. You should remove apps that are  not too useful.

Now assuming you have done all the steps above, you should have some space on your internal memory. But, if you still have serious issues on your phone internal memory, your final step is to reset the phone. This would return the phone to factory settings so that all the junks clogging the internal memory are wiped out.
Ideally, only the internal memory files would be removed, all SD files will remain.

In other to reset, go to Settings, scroll down and click on Backup & Reset and then click on Factory data reset, finally, click on Reset phone.

Once the device is reset, you phone will reboot and be as new.

Upgrading to Python 2 7 simple and practical

We launched a major improvement to the Python runtime when we introduced support for Python 2.7 last February. It has since proven to be astonishingly popular – just a few months later more than half of all active Python applications on App Engine are using Python 2.7.

What’s so great about Python 2.7? It isn’t just a language update, it also includes a number of features that can help your apps run much more efficiently.

Increase efficiency with concurrent requests. Now a single frontend instance can handle multiple requests at the same time in separate threads. This means App Engine requires fewer frontend instances to handle the traffic, which can lead to significant cost savings.

Rapidly growing mobile gaming company Pocket Gems reduced the cost of running their front-end instances by 78% when they switched to to the Python 2.7 runtime. “We immediately saw a dramatic difference” said engineering director David Underhill  “We only need one third as many instances under Python 2.7 as we did under 2.5 to handle the same traffic”.

Move faster with more native C modules. In Python 2.7 we’ve added more native C modules to App Engine. Core libraries like cPickle run much faster than the equivalent pure Python library available in the Python 2.5 runtime.

Take advantage of popular third-party libraries like PIL and numpy. We’ve greatly expanded the number of third party libraries available for use in App Engine in Python 2.7. So far we’ve added the Python Imaging Library (PIL), lxml, numpy, and several others.

Best of all, upgrading wont require lots of code changes. “It was pretty straightforward,” says Underhill. “We had to be careful, but we ended up needing to change less than 0.4% of the code”.

If youre ready to make the switch, check out our migration guide, find out more about the other great features of the Python 2.7 runtime and get in-depth tips from the App Engine Python team by watching their talk on Migrating to Python 2.7 at Google I/O 2012.

Google’s First Stock Split Is Now Ready To Go Brings Single Share Price Down To Approximately 560

Google-Logo-AH-1

Today, Google announced their earnings for Q4 of 2013 with an impressive $16.88 Billion in revenue. Of course, news came out concerning Motorola as well, with the company once again posting a loss of $384 Million. In comparison to the amount of money Google bought in, that’s a hit the search giant can take, but with Motorola now having been sold off to Lenovo, Google will one less thing to worry about shortly. As it was Google’s earnings call, a fair amount of news concerning the business side of things emerged from Mountain View today. Not a lot of it all that interesting to the likes of us, but if you like money, this sort of thing is always going to be interesting.

Google’s share price has been on the rise steadily since last year and has since climbed above the $1,000 mark, with it currently trading at $1,135.39 (at the time of writing). This has caused Google to give the greenlight to an upcoming stock split. If you’re unfamiliar with a stock split, it’s essentially what it sounds like. Stock is split by the company into less valuable shares. The stock split from Google is going to be a 2-for-1 stock split, which will see the value of each share fall by half, bringing stock prices down to around $560 or so. The split has been a long time coming, but it’s been held up by red tape and other things. The new stock will start public trading on April 3rd later this year.

Google’s stock split will produce Class C stock, which will float on the market with the original naming of GOOG, meanwhile Class A stock will trade on the market with GOOGL as its moniker. Class C stock will carry no vote, meaning no say in the direction of the company. While this sort of thing is fairly common, it’s the first time that Google will be offering a stock split and could mean big things for the search giant. The company’s valuation sees no effect, so don’t expect Google to suddenly fall overnight as a result. If you have stock in Google, or might be considering buying some of the new Class C stock, reach out in the comments below!

Sonys Xperia Z1 and Zu will jump directly to Android 4 4 older phones will get 4 3 by the end of the year

Owners of the flagship Sony Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra will be delighted to learn that their devices might go straight to Android 4.4 KitKat in the end of January/beginning of February timeframe, insiders have indicated.

They will skip the jump to Android 4.3 and get the latest directly, but the older Sony phones from this year, such as the Xperia Z, ZL and ZR, are going to get Android 4.3 first, as scheduled by year-end, and then eventually receive the KitKat sweetness.

Sony already tweeted that it will have more news about the Android 4.3 and 4.4 updates this week, so it should be confirming soon whether this rumor about a direct jump to KitKat for the Z1 and Z Ultra will pan out. PhoneArena

Gree Adds 21 Models Of GE Dehumidifiers To Massive Slow Recall

If you have a GE dehumidifier in your home, time to check the serial number: Gree Electric Appliances has recalled 350,000 dehumidifiers sold between April 2008 and December 2011 because they could potentially overheat and cause a fire. If this recall sounds familiar, it should: Gree already recalled 2.2 million dehumidifiers sold under brand names that you might recognize like De’Longhi, Frigidaire, and Kenmore. Customers have complained to Consumerist that this recall has been slow and crappy.

The biggest complaint that readers have about the recall is that the checks are very, very slow. They complain that their checks still aren’t here four months after sending in their information, and at least one reader’s submission has disappeared entirely.

Once the checks arrive, they’re small and insufficient. Large dehumidifers aren’t cheap–the recalled Gree models cost between $180 and $270, so customers. Checks generally don’t cover the entire amount that consumers paid for their appliances, and in many municipalities, consumers have to pay a recycling fee for appliances of this size.

Anyway, check the list of recalled GE models if you have one in your home. If you have any dehumidifiers at all that you’ve bought in the last six years or so, you should probably check the recall list just in case.
